Green Public Sector Organisation of the Year

This award celebrates councils, government departments, and public service entities with 25+ full-time employees that excel in integrating environmental sustainability into their operations. This category recognises organisations that not only demonstrate exceptional commitment to reducing environmental impact and implementing green practices but also go beyond standard expectations for their sector. Judges will look for innovative solutions and measurable outcomes that set a high benchmark for environmental stewardship. Entry is by a 5-page A4 PDF submission; the judges will be looking for a clear plan and evidence that it is delivering on core objectives, paying particular attention to the criteria listed below.

  • Organisation background: Briefly describe your organisation’s size, structure, core functions, and how it supports environmental sustainability.
  • Sustainability Strategy: Detail your sustainability strategy, including goals, objectives, specific initiatives aimed at reducing environmental impact, and how it’s integrated into daily operations.
  • Innovative Solutions: Highlight any unique practices or technologies you have implemented to boost environmental sustainability and their impact.
  • Outcomes & Results: Provide data showing the results of your sustainability efforts, including year-on-year improvements and key performance indicators.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Explain how you engage and educate employees and the public about your sustainability efforts.
  • Community and Environmental Impact: Describe the positive effects of your sustainability efforts on the community and environment, with specific examples.
  • Bio-diversity / Improving Natural Habitats: Describe any activities your organisation has recently taken to conserve biodiversity, use biological resources sustainably, improve natural habitats.
  • Energy / Water efficiency: Describe the steps your organisation has taken to improve energy efficiency and/or water efficiency.
  • Sustainable Transport Initiatives: Describe any sustainable transport initiatives your organisation has taken, e.g., to reduce congestion, to green your fleet, or any other any other actions that result in fuel savings, CO2 emission reduction.
  • Recycling & Waste Management: Describe the steps taken to reduce and recycle waste within your organisation.
  • Staff Involvement & Training: What commitment has been made to staff training and communication of your green initiatives? What is the level of senior management buy in? Does it form a central part of the culture?
  • Community Engagement: Outline the impacts on engagement with local businesses and the wider community.
